The show which is in its 113th year (6th July 2019) encourages both the novice and experienced, adults and children alike, to have a go at entering their vegetable produce, flowers, baking and handicraft with the lure of winning a rosette or better still one of the coveted trophies. The Show, a quintessentially village affair, a lovely traditional family day with bouncy castle, Punch and Judy and tea and cake on the lawn which should not be missed if you are new to the Ham & Petersham area.
This year we have added some new events to our calendar,
-The New Inn at Ham Common will be the cosy backdrop for three informal gatherings amongst like minded neighbours (no expertise or majestic gardens required!), these will also give opportunity to swap seeds, seedings, jams and chutney’s. (7th May, 12th Sep &19th Nov)
-The Petersham Horticultural Society have planned several guided tours including Chelsea Physic Garden (7th June), a family trip Kew Gardens (31st May) and even SipSmith Gin Distillery Tour (date to be confirmed). Our trips are open to all with discounts for members.
-Two years ago we started a seed planting event to instil a love of gardening in the local children. In 2019, this free event will be on the 9th March in the Petersham Sea Scouts Field (with tea and cake raising money for their new hut), hopefully the Beast for the East will not be joining us.
-For those members (free) and non members (small fee) who want expand their skills we have practical sessions being arranged in how to divide perennials(6th April) and in flower arranging (date to be confirmed) and also cooking that glut of courgettes (date to be confirmed).
-Our Annual talk (accompanied by a practical demonstration) is from the fabulous Flower Angels. A charity that takes unwanted flowers from short term displays across London and transform them into small arrangements distributed by volunteers to give pleasure to those in hospices and nursing homes. (date to be confirmed)
I wonder if you might like to join our committee; we are searching for a Vice President and also for a committee member to improve the content of internet presence and help with our marketing (a small but vital role). We are a small committee of locals who get together over tea and cake to plan the year ahead. We meet on Sunday mornings in one of the committee member’s houses approximately 4 times a year. Do contact me directly for me for more information. As your new president I would welcome suggestions of topics, speakers or adventures which you feel the society should covering. I am on president@petershamhorticulturalsociety.org.uk.
